Interview

In my view, tarot is a wonderful tool for accessing the power of story, for examining the personal in light of the mythic and archetypal, for re-writing endings and creating new beginnings. – Marianne

I found Marianne from Two Sides Tarot on Instagram. I’m in love with tarot and with artists, and seeing the tarot displayed as art – welp. I’ve got a crush on Marianne. She’s got a fantastic website with deck reviews, interviews and insight into the cards.

I’m always astounded by folks who email, asking why I promote other readers on my site. I can only say that I will never stop learning, and if I find a good teacher, I like to make sure other people know about them.

SO – go check out Marianne. Get a reading, check out her decks, and learn more about her here:

LFT Questionnaire

1. What you appreciate the most in your friends.

Really, the answer to this is everything, but if I must be specific, it’s their unique perspectives, their smarts, their acceptance of my weirdness, their endless ability to charm me and make me laugh.

2. Your idea of happiness.

Comparing birth charts with a friend by the ocean (probably with coffee). That anticipation when I turn the first page of a new book. Burying my face in a sleeping cat’s belly fluff. Being in bed with a cute babe. Those moments when you realize that things aren’t ok but somehow you are.

3. Your idea of misery.

An office job.

4. Your favorite colors and flowers.

Orange, in all of its various shades. They don’t come in orange (at least, I don’t think they do) but hydrangeas will always stop me in my tracks, and you can’t go past that Sydney spring-y smell of jasmine cascading over a stranger’s front fence.

5. Your favorite poets.

Mary Oliver, Maggie Nelson, Jim Harrison, Ellen Bass, Jimmy Santiago Baca.

6. Your heroes/heroines in fiction.

Ellen Ripley, Lolly Willowes, Adam Parrish, Dale Cooper, Weetzie Bat.

7. What role does divination play in your life?

It’s my work, but also one of my greatest passions. It informs my spiritual practice, but also how I move through the world. In one way or another, it’s something I do every day, and the lens through which I interpret almost everything in my life.

8. Your heroes/heroines in real life.

Eve Babitz, Vivian Gornick, Jessa Crispin, Tori Amos, Olivia Laing, Rebecca Solnit, Maggie Nelson. Come to think of it, my heroes are all just writers who take women’s lives seriously.

9. What is your present state of mind?

I’m presently transmuting dissatisfaction into razor sharp focus. It seems to be working!

10. What is your favorite tarot deck or divination tool?

Don’t make me pick a favourite child! I have so many decks that I love to use in different moods and circumstances, so I can’t say I have just one favourite. Enduring loves though are the Spirit Speak Tarot, Dame Darcy’s Mermaid Tarot, the Aquarian Tarot, and the Dreaming Way Tarot. They’ve all been with me for a long time and even though I’m often distracted by new shiny things, I always come back to them eventually.

11. Your favorite songs?

Like tarot decks, favourite songs depend so much on mood, but the loves that have endured are practically everything by Conor Oberst or Tori Amos (yes, I have a lot of feelings). Right now, I’m driving my neighbours crazy by listening to the new Lana Del Rey on repeat. We’ll see if that makes it into my long-term rotation or not!

12. What is your favorite word?

Liminal. It just rolls off the tongue, and makes me think of the High Priestess.

13. What is your least favorite word?

Ombudsman. Have you ever heard a less pleasant arrangement of syllables? I don’t think so.

14. What sound or noise do you love?

Magpies warbling. Kettles whistling. Cats snoring. Perfumes atomizing. Twitter notifications making me feel popular.

15. What sound or noise do you hate?

Men yelling. Sad, whining puppies.

16. What turns you on?

Sick memes. Integrated shadows.

17. What turns you off?

Closed-mindedness.

18. What is your favorite curse word?

Asshat or fuckhead. Two syllables are better than one!

19. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

Do you want to play again?
