Interview

The Oracle of the Old West – Jenny Roques

After 20 years in St. Louis, I’m finally starting to think of it as home. We have our problems, to be sure, but the good guys always seem to come through when we need them. We also have artists, musicians, craftspeople and artisans -and sometimes, all of those things in one person. Jenny Roques is a St. Louis musician, artist, craftsperson and artisan, and she has a new line of products that mix magic and self care.

There are bath bombs with the St. Louis signature Fleur de Lis, with a crystal in the middle. She’s also got shower steamers (yummy thingers that make your shower smell amazing) love spell bath bombs, and the woman has even found biodegradable glitter. There are face, mind and body sprays that connect to your chakras or just whichever scent you like the best.

You can find Jenny’s amazing products here, and can learn more about her below.

1.  What you appreciate the most in your friends.

There is so much I appreciate about my friends, it is hard to pin down even just a few! Honesty, empathy, humor, support, from how they inspire me, how proud of them I am. Their creativity. So many things!

2.  Your idea of happiness.

My idea of happiness is laughing, loving, being kind. Being grateful for all that you have.

3.  Your idea of misery.

My idea of misery is being stuck. Feeling hopeless. That is a miserable feeling.

4.  Where would you like to live?

I would love to live in Tucson or anywhere in the Sonoran Desert!

5.  Your favorite colors and flowers.

My favorite colors are dark green and deep, crimson red. My favorite flowers are Peonies and Saguaro blooms.

6.  Your favorite poets.

This is a hard one for me! I don’t read nearly as much poetry and I should. What I have read is mostly older poetry as well. I have always enjoyed the Brontë sisters work. Specifically, Charlotte. Fiercely independent, intelligent and diligent, she kept writing through rejection and a male dominated world.

7.  Your heroes/heroines in fiction.

One of the books that I really loved when I was young was “Little Women”, by Louisa M Alcott. The character Jo March was an inspiration to me, and when the 90’s version of the movie came out (starring Winona Ryder) it was my dream world. Jo was strong, opinionated, argumentative, and everything that a women was told not to be by the patriarchal society.

8.  What role does divination play in your life?

Divination plays a large role in my life. Not only has it helped me understand more of who I am, but has helped me connect more to the people I love, the planet and the stars. It has helped me gain perspective, understanding and patience.

9.  Your heroes/heroines in real life.

My mother. After having my child, it really put into perspective what being a parent is, and what comes a long with that. I honor and respect my mother for doing all she did for me. She is my hero.

10.  What is your present state of mind?

The Bee! Ha! No really, I have been running and doing so much lately, that I really feel like a busy bee. I have to remind myself to stay grounded, though, with that much buzzing around.

11.  What is your favorite tarot deck or divination tool?

My favorite deck of cards to use is my Lakota Sweat Lodge Oracle deck. It has been the deck that I have received multiple gifts of, and always seems to know what messages need to come through. Is it what my client wants to hear about sometimes? Not every time, but I think that’s why I respect them so much. Sometimes they say “Hey, I know you want to talk about this thing right now, but we really need to address this other stuff first.” They also have a sense of humor, and tend to be redundant if they already said what they want to say.

12.  Your favorite songs?

Woo whee! This is a tough one! I have so many favorite songs, and sometimes that shifts because of the season, or theme of the week! One that holds steady and true is “Cornflake Girl” by Tori Amos. I will never grow tired of that song!

13.  What is your favorite word?

Jalopy. It just rolls off the tongue!

14.  What is your least favorite word?

 Pus. YUCK

16.  What sound or noise do you hate?

17.  What turns you on?

History!

18.  What turns you off?

Competition, fakeness and being mean.

19.  What is your favorite curse word?

Shit. Effective and adaptable. HA!

20.  If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

“Well, that was weird!”
