How do you choose a Tarot deck?

Hey, there! If you grew up in a place like I did, tarot decks were scarce. I saw my first one at 14, and didn’t see another until college. There was no internet (gasp!) til I was in my twenties and I wasn’t a part of the tarot community until about 6 years ago.  Now, there seems to be the opposite problem – decks are everywhere!  It can be a bit overwhelming, for sure, especially when you’re a beginner.  Here are some deck-hunting resources that you might enjoy. In Person sources! Go to your local bookstore and new age hippie …

How do you do a reading over the phone or through email?

As you might maybe know, I’ve been reading the cards in PERSON for 30 years. I didn’t start with this Ms. Cleo phone reading business until about 15 years ago. I didn’t think it would work. I mean, people asked me how I did in person readings, and the answers I had for that ran from “My intuition is talking to your intuition and the cards are a tool that facilitates that.” to “Fuck if I know.” A reading over the phone seemed impossible. I believe that folks had their own energy, and that by reading for them long distance …

How do you do a reading?

This month, we’re going to talk about tarot basics. A lot of my students have never touched a tarot deck before we sit down together, and I’ve compiled some of their questions together for you guys. Feel free to send any questions you have. The biggest question that I get is HOW do you do a reading. Not spiritually or emotionally, but actually physically doing the reading. I’ve broken down how I do a reading below. Just remember that the way you do readings is entirely up to you. This is for in-person readings. I’m going to cover phone and …

Tarot For Troubled Times | Book Review

I got an advanced peek at Shaheen Miro and Theresa Reed’s new book, Tarot for Troubled Times. I got it at a time in which a lot of my clients and friends were feeling stuck or broken. As if they were suffocating. I am not a big fan of ‘love and light’ as a response to brokenness, because I think that should come after. After the reckoning. After the healing. That kind of sparkly energy is annoying as hell when you’re just trying to get through the day without bursting into tears at Target. This book speaks to people in …

Queer Tarot Cards and the #TarotoftheQTPOC

If I could rewrite (IPPY Award and double COVR Award winning book whaaaaaat) Kitchen Table Tarot again, I would spend more time talking about the importance of seeing your face in the cards. Since that book was published in 2017, SO MANY decks have come out featuring all kinds of folks that are noticeably not all straight and not all white.  So here is a list of queer decks that are available. You can also follow the hashtag started by Asali on Twitter of #tarotoftheQTPOC. This features decks with queer folks and people of color AND queer people of color. …

Queer Zine & Comic Artist Kami | Interview

So, there I am, fiddling about on Twitter instead of writing my new book (like ya do) when I saw this amazing fan art tarot card of Jared Harris. I know you know who Jared Harris is. He’s died horribly in some of the best movies and television shows out there. He stars in a show called “The Terror”, which I can never watch because I am a giant chicken. I’m sure it’s an amazing show, however, because the reviews are great and the art inspired BY this show is absolutely breathtaking. I saw someone tag a card, and then …

Terry Iacuzzo | Omega Institute

Terry Iacuzzo is the first person to make me feel like I was not insane. She wrote a book in 2004 about her life as a psychic raised in a family of psychics. I know something about this. The way that she described picking up on information that she didn’t have access to, just *knew* things that she shouldn’t know – she made those things that scared me and made me unsure of my gifts seem normal. I was lucky enough to get to talk to her a few years ago, and we became friends. I can’t tell you how …

The Bohemian Animal Tarot | Deck Review

Y’all know I’m a sucker for a fox. The Bohemian Animal Tarot has many foxen, and they’re cleverly used in this deck. The animals that are chosen to represent each card has something in common with them. The Magician is a Fox, staring straight at you – confidence. The Jackal is the animal for Judgement, and the card depicts ancient Egypt. This is a lovely deck. The artwork is beautiful and the colors are nice. The cardstock is great (Go Rockpool Publishing!) and even though it’s a little big, it’s fine for shuffling. No issues with diversity as it’s all …

This Might Hurt Tarot Deck | New Deck Alert

Kickstarter is a pain in my ass. I don’t go on it often, because I have almost 300 decks, and that’s just plenty, you know? I’m working on streamlining my house and stuff and Kickstarter is the antithesis of streamlining. So, I logged in just for funsies, and ended up backing a deck within seconds. Goddamnit. It’s not my fault, truly. This deck has sweet men, strong women, butch women, genderqueer people of color, a SMILING hierophant that changes the whole feel of the card. The World has a belly, and the Star has pubic hair. I mean, I couldn’t …

Modern Witch Tarot | New Deck Alert

You guys know how I look for diversity in decks. Trust and believe me that I am over the MOON for the Modern Witch Tarot. These are the same folks who brought us the beautiful Luna Sol tarot (also diverse). They are releasing 1,111 special edition decks (that are half sold out already) with the swag that you see below. If the cards are anything like the Luna Sol deck, the card stock will be fantastic and the rest of the artwork will be amazing. Reading these cards for 30 years, and I never knew that the Magician I was …
