I’m a reader.
And it’s the most amazing job in the Universe.
I’ve been reading tarot cards for 30 years (well, 29.5 technically) and I can tell you that they’re not magical, mystical or otherwise. The cards are cards, and you’re the one who makes them meaningful.
Tarot is a journey that we take together. Just the two of us. You lead the way, and I’ll point out the troublesome spots or the things you might miss if you’re looking in the wrong direction. (Forward – always look forward.)
I’m an author.
I’ve wanted to be an author since I was six.
My first book, Kitchen Table Tarot, provides a down to earth, common sense approach to reading tarot cards. It also won the Independent Publisher Award for Best First Book, so that was cool.
My second book, Tarot Elements: Five Readings to Reset Your Life, is coming out in the spring of 2019, and gives you five readings to help you unstick yourself in the home, heart, mind, body and soul.
I’m a midnight cowboy.
I mean, not really, but it’s an aspiration.
I live in St. Louis with my husband, Joe (who is my favorite), my kiddos and four black cats, two dogs, and our tortoise, Phil. I really, really like superhero movies and when I’m not reading or writing, I’m hanging out with my friends. I’m a lucky girl.
I’m working on a tarot deck with artist Cate Anevski, another deck with my friend Ellie, and have outlines for two more books. I’m excited for the future.
Melissa published her first book, Kitchen Table Tarot, with Llewellyn Publishing in April 2017.
“I started teaching tarot to my friends at my kitchen table. We would have a few beers and I’d hold up a card and pull out every pertinent detail I could about the card. Where I’d seen it in readings, what was happening next, who it reminded me of. That’s why this book is called Kitchen Table Tarot. Because we’re about to become friends, you and I. And I have a lot to show you.”
Tarot is storytelling at its base. You are using the tool of the cards to elaborate someone’s story. Getting in touch with your storytelling self is one of the most important things you can do in your journey through tarot. My storytelling self swears a lot. I see the pictures in my head of what has been, could be, will be. Yours is going to be different – embrace that.
Her second book, Tarot Elements: Five Readings To Reset Your Life will be available March 8, 2019.
She is also a featured author in Llewellyn’s 2019 Magical Almanac, where she shares ways in which to care for yourself using just the Elements and your deck.
Northwest Tarot Symposium
Held at the Monarch Hotel and Conference Center in Portland, Oregon, the Northwest Tarot Symposium focuses on cartomancy including Tarot, Oracle, and Lenormand. Melissa presented in 2015 and 2016, and will be attending every other year.
This conference is a wonderful opportunity for new tarot readers to learn from outstanding tarot readers and teachers, and it’s in one of Melissa’s favorite cities.
